Storm lighters that keep burning in the wind

A storm lighter blows the gas out under pressure. That gives you a blue, focused flame that stays lit in wind where an ordinary yellow flame would long since have gone out. That is the whole difference, and immediately the reason it is the standard choice outdoors.

After that the choice comes down to three things: the number of flames, whether it is refillable and the size.

Which storm lighter suits your use?

A soft flame needs air from outside and is blown away by the first gust. In the cold there is the added problem that the gas pressure drops and the flame gets smaller. A jet flame mixes the gas in the burner itself and suffers far less from that, in damp weather too. You notice it most when you have to hold it a little longer, as with kindling or charcoal that will not catch. A windproof flame then saves you a handful of attempts.

Storm lighter with a burning blue jet flame held in the hand

One flame or four

One jet flame is precise and economical and enough for a cigar, a candle or a wick. Four flames make a wide hot cone that works faster on charcoal, a fire pit or a fuse.

Refillable or not

The refillable models are topped up with butane gas, so they last for years instead of months. Look at the size of the gas tank as well, because that decides how often you have to refill.

Pocket size or table model

The smallest models are under 9 centimetres and disappear into a trouser pocket. The larger ones of a good 16 centimetres sit more firmly in the hand and stay upright, which works nicely at the barbecue.

Tip

Refill a storm lighter with butane gas at 45 PSI. At lower pressure the jet flame burns unevenly, and in the cold you notice that first.

Buying a storm lighter at PyroProducts

This category holds storm lighters with one to four jet flames, from pocket size to table model, singly and in value sets. Nearly all refillable with butane gas.

Outdoors a storm lighter is often the only one that works: at the barbecue, a fire pit, on the campsite or around New Year. If you want it specifically for lighting coals, have a look at the BBQ lighters; if you only want models you refill, those are with the refillable lighters.

When comparing, look at the number of flames, the size of the gas tank, whether the flame is adjustable and whether it has a lock. Which models perform best in practice is in the best storm lighters.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a storm lighter windproof?

The gas is blown through a small nozzle under pressure and mixed with air in the burner itself. That creates a blue, focused flame that does not depend on still air around it and therefore stays lit when the wind picks up.

Are storm lighters refillable?

Virtually all models in this category are refilled with lighter gas. Check the product information for the model you pick. Refillable saves a good deal over time, because the lighter itself lasts for years.

Which gas do you use for a storm lighter?

Butane gas at 45 PSI. At lower pressure or with less pure gas the flame burns unevenly and the valve clogs up sooner. Fill calmly, hold the lighter upright and wait a minute before you light it.

One flame or four flames, which do I choose?

One flame if you want to work precisely: a cigar, a candle, a wick. Four flames if it has to be quick over a larger surface, such as charcoal or a fire pit. Four flames do use more gas per minute.

Is a storm lighter suitable for fireworks?

The blue jet flame keeps burning in wind and cold, which is why it is often chosen around New Year. Preferably pick a long model, keep enough distance and always follow the instructions on the packaging and the rules that apply.

How long does one filling last?

That depends on the size of the gas tank and the number of flames. A model with four flames uses roughly four times as much per second as a single flame. So a bigger tank mainly means refilling less often.
